Mustard had the pleasure of speaking with Boston grunge band Headfirst who are currently working on their second LP. Additionally we talked about going head first into situations, lemonade, their creative process, and so much more!
1. Mustard is grateful and appreciative to have Headfirst join them at On The Shelf. How is everyone doing today?
Thank you Mustard, we are all surviving and breathing all right.
2. Before we begin, Mustard must know, what are some things that the band like to go head first into? What situations call for diving in without hesitation?
We love going headfirst into the game Peggle, Dairy Queen, any store that sells beer, Tasty Burger, and what your innermost desires.
3. On the other hand, Mustard is curious, what situations do you recommend a human not go head first into? What are the potential consequences?
We cannot advice you go headfirst into traffic, a deep dark cave, Oscar the Grouch’s trashcan, or even any trash can for that sake. Do not dive into any hard surfaces or shallow pools. As well as drugs, a shark’s mouth, or drunk texting. Most consequences end in head trauma or death.
4. Mustard has observed that you make grunge in a whole new way. How would you define your style of grunge?
It’s like grunge with a bit of Y2k mixed into it.
5. You’ve described your music as a love letter to 90s and 2000s rock and hip hop. Which albums and artists helped shape you as a band?
Some of our most influential albums are Nirvana - In Utero, Basement - Colourmeinkindness, Any Denzel Curry Album, Any Weezer.
6. Headfirst has been compared to the likes of Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, and Basement. Which album from each does the band consider essential listening?
Definitely In Utero, Colourmeinkindess, and Whatever’s Cool With Me.
7. Mustard has noticed that humans love a good origin story. What is Headfirst’s origin story?
Well, our planet Peggle of galaxy B612119B2 was under attack by the Rommulins, then we were told to evacuate. Our parents kissed our foreheads and placed us in escape pods and we landed in the land they call…. the Oosah, where we spread the sound of our people.
8. How would you describe your creative process?
Raj and/or Coby makes a song on an acoustic guitar. Beatboxes to Bima and then we come up with harmonies within 5 minutes.
9. 2021 saw the release of your debut single “Lemonade.” Was this single conceived while enjoying an ice cold lemonade?
Ironically no, Siraj was drinking a Mug Root Beer and a Red Powerade.
10. There are various flavors of lemonade. What is everyone’s favorite flavor of lemonade?
Siraj and Coby’s favorite flavor of lemonade is strawberry lemonade. Bima is just now finding out about these so called “other flavors.”
11. Mustard wonders: when should a human take a break? Why is it important that someone takes a break?
When you are working in the summer heat, sitting for two hours, or when you need to go to the bathroom. It is also important to take a break what you’re driving. You should use your brakes more often.
12. They have also heard humans “taking a break” from one another. What does this mean? Does it happen often?
Taking a break from another person means you spend an allotted time apart or even indefinitely. I would say this does happen often, if one or both parties are unhappy or overwhelmed by the other’s presence.
13. In 2022 you released your debut album “I Believe.” Could you share what it was like to put this album together?
It took us fourteen hours in a nicely converted garage/studio in Charlestown. We were all much younger and it was lots of fun.
14. The album art features an alien. Did you meet this alien? Were they curious about human life?
Barry the Alien was a blackout drunk drawing that Siraj did on the back of a bookshelf and I’ve followed him ever since. I think I am more interested about him than he is about me, he also bore the name HeadFirst.
15. Can cigarettes only be smoked on a Thursday?
You can smoke them any day, as long as they never find out.
16. A human gets the chance to see Headfirst perform. How would you describe your live performances?
Loud, energetic, positive, fun to dance to, charismatic, and unforgettable
17. Mustard wonders what is on the horizon for Headfirst?
We have lots on the Horizon. We are currently finishing up our second studio album under the running title “Modern Role Models” and we hope to follow it for as long as that goes. Keep your eyes out for release dates
18. Where can readers listen to your music?
